I went looking for the sunset tonight, it was beautiful but I had no oomph. Drove to Jamestown, wasn’t up to the crowds and I just couldn’t get enthused with the composition, all those beautiful puffy clouds stayed inland. So I came home and took a drive through Providence, stopped for a few shots of the First Baptist Church steeple against the blue sky and the puffy clouds but it still didn’t do anything for me. So I was working on a few older images and came across the pictures we took on Cadillac Mountain the first night we were up in Bar Harbor. It was a spectacular sunset, the drive up had been rainy all the way until we got to Ellsworth then the sun started peeping through the clouds. The colors were simply amazing and I loved the layers of the mountains in the distance and their blue tones.

Sunset from Cadillac Mountain

Tech stuff:

Canon 50D, Canon 24-105L f/4.0 ISO 400 1/6 sec at f/16 -2/3ev. Processed in CS5 with nik Dfine and Viveza 2 to brighten and increase contrast. Sharpening by Tony Kuyper’s sharpening action.

Oystercatcher and Chick

Taken during the workshop Roamin’ with Roman given by Roman Kurywczak and Denise Ippolito at Nickerson Beach on LI, NY.

Tufted Titmouse

Unlike the browns of it’s upper body the Willets wings are strongly banded and quite striking.

Taken at Brenton Reef SP in Newport RI after a frantic drive to get there as the sun was setting. Father and daughter were sitting on the bench watching the sun set, I was fortunate that she sat still through the 3 fairly long exposures. HDR processed in photomatix, adjustments made in LR and with Nik Plugins in photoshop. Sharpening done with Tony Kuyper’s action.

I was working on some images today and feeling cold but instead of pushing up the heat I looked back at some images that I took when Mike and I made a not so triumphant attempt at hiking to the summit of Mount Jefferson on the Caps Ridge Trail. Mike and I got married on the “first cap” of the Caps Ridge Trail twelve and a half years ago with two very good friends as attendants and for the first few years we would go up, stay at the ever wonderful Notchland Inn and hike the trail. We did this until I tore my (replacement) ACL (I’ve now had 4 surgeries on that knee – but that’s a different type of post for a different type of blog) and moved onto to less arduous hikes. But this summer we wanted to give it a try again, and although we didn’t summit we got over 3/4 the way there and it wasn’t my knee that made me ask to turn back, which is a good step (groan).

We got a fairly early start, we thought until we saw the dozens of cars in the tiny parking lot at the trailhead. This summer was very wet and the first weekend in August was the first dry weekend that we had in New England and it seemed like everyone was out for a hike. But it was a beautiful morning, the greens were unbelievably green from all the rain and there was a mist rising off the ground. As we came around a corner of the trail I saw this:

I wanted to make an HDR of the image because the tonal range was just too great for a single shot and I’m not overly fond of tonemapped single images, they never look natural to me. I’d brought the 50D with me because I wanted to keep the weight in my pack down and at that moment regretted it dearly. The 50D is not a bad camera as long as you keep your ISO low, once you go above 400 ISO the noise is very noticeable and the process of making an hdr enhances that. Of course since I was keeping the weight down I had no tripod so I did the best I could I got 6 images taken before the light shafts disappeared but the last 2 in each series (+2 exposure) were very blurry – no way I’m holding anything still at 1/6 sec. (f/4.0 ISO 400). So this was a 2 exposure hdr combined in photomatix, adjusted with Nik Software in LR2 and then adjusted and sharpened with Tony Kuypers actions in PSCS4

Happy Holidays to everyone and I hope next year is as full of love and happiness and fun as can be!

Palm and Pool with "glamour glow"

The last morning on Kaua’i was frustrating in a way, the flight out to Honolulu then Hilo wasn’t until 2:45 which meant we had time for a nice lesiurely breakfast and lunch but left us with too much time on our hands, yet not enough to go anywhere significant. So we wandered the grounds, Mike going for shots of some of the waterfowl and birds on the property and me looking for some more scenic images of this beautiful spot. I was struck by the shadow of the palm tree in one of the pools but wanted something a little extra. So after fooling about a bit with the Nik plugins I decided on the “glamour glow” effect. I think it’s pretty cool.

For comparison here is the non “glamour glow” image:

Palm and Pool no glow

Canon 5DMII, Canon 15-35L f/2.8 Polarizing filter. Finished with Nik Plugins in LR2 (after removing a stray swimmer too!)

Dead tree in lava field

As we drove down the Chain of Craters road we passed by a lava covered field that was being reclaimed by grasses. This lava flow is about 40 years old and I am not sure if this tree was killed during the flow, but I am guessing it grew since then and reached a size that the sparse minerals in the lava could no longer support. In another 40 years it probably would have survived to be twice the size it was.

Parrot Fish

Parrot Fish

We could hear these fish chomping on the coral as we snorkeled. This one was seen at the Captain Cook Monument.

Beachfront tree

Last morning in Kaua’i taking some pictures around the resort before we headed to the airport for our flights to Hilo
