Every time I see lupines I think of my BFF from college Eva and the trip we took circumnavigating Nova Scotia the year I started practicing in Newport. Mike and I took a too short trip to Acadia National Park three weekends ago, just before the beginning of the summer season and luckily the lupines were in bloom. So Eva, this Lupine is for you.

Full moon falling

The full moon as it was setting at 4:45AM, from the parking lot of Nickerson Beach where I met Roman Kurywczak and Denise Ippolito for a half day workshop shooting the birds at Nickerson Beach. I can’t say enough good things about those two and the workshop they lead, full of great information, ideas, vision and a perfect location. I even got to meet the famous (infamous?) Artie Morris. Going to go back and do it again in July and I can’t wait. More pictures from the workshop to come as I weed through the 1000+ images I took in 4 hours!

On the beach at Captiva Island. When Mikes Dad and step-Mom came to visit while we were in Fort Myers we took them there, Pat loves to collect shells and this is a paradise of shells. People were actually using what looked like mesh panniers to scoop them out at shoreline looking for that special one.

The sun was setting over our first day in Ding Darling and these White Pelicans didn’t much seem to care, they went on with their grooming until well after the sun sunk below the horizon

I didn’t do much landscape work while we were on this trip, although there were opportunities that just seemed not to be taken. I’ve only got a handful of them, and most were sunsets. I think this might be my favorite.

‘Twas a cold and windy night. No really, it was. I didn’t think it was that cold or that windy when I was home in little Rhody, there were light clouds and the sky was clear so I decided that I’d drive to Boston and go to a place called Piers Park in East Boston and see what there was to see. I’d been in the mood to do some city shots for a while but as luck had it every day I had off the weather did not cooperate until this past Monday, or so I thought. I’d heard of Piers Park from some flickr friends most especially I’d been inspired by Briburt’s work. I was a bit surprised 40 minutes later when I got there to find it was 10 degrees cooler (50F) and the wind was coming out of the west at 20 knots. Not ideal for photography but I stuck it out taking a few images before retreating to my car to wait for sunset. This is an HDR of the last 3 shots of the night, 45 minutes after the sun went down and I stopped being able to feel my nose. I had been packing things up when I noticed that the clock was lit up on the face of the Custom House Tower so I had to take a few more, since what is a night shot of Boston without it!

Another shot I took whilst out with Terry on our long hike through the streets of Boston. You can see that “party yacht” better in this shot, it’s a bit of an eyesore against the brick and glass buildings, I wish I got lower to hide it better. I like the way the light illuminates the redish gold leaf on the cobblestones and the seagull waiting for a handout. Another HDR processed in Photomatix then finished with Nik Plugins and Tony Kuypers web sharpening actionTwilight from Moakley Courthouse

I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus from all aspects of photography, the number of unread blogs I subscribe to is well over 1000 and I haven’t even picked up my camera since going down to watch Mike and Jas surf at the begining of November. We even went hiking up falling waters trail in NH and I only brought my little point and shoot and took 3 pictures that I haven’t looked at yet. Part of it is ennui, part of it is Dragon Age, part of it is that I’ve been reading vociferously but I seem to be reviving. I took another look the images I took with Terry when he was up that first weekend of November and started working on a few of them. This is probably my favorite of the series. The wrought iron sculptures of the sailing ships worked nicely to camouflage the yacht that was moored in front of the Boston Harbor Hotel which stood out like a sore thumb. I don’t like the slight haloing around the buildings but it’s there in each of the raw images to some extent, it’s where the light was the strongest I guess. I didn’t feel like spending hours in photoshop to make it go away so I didn’t.

Ku'emanu Heiau

Heiau means temple in Hawai’ian There were many types of temple from those for healing to those for luck in fishing or harvest, in voyaging and even those for success in war (although those were dedicated through human sacrifice). This Heiau is the only one in Hawai’i that was dedicated to surfing. Surfing was only for men of the noble class (who surfed naked apparently) commoners surfing in this area were put to death. But times have changed. This young Hawai’ian is sitting in front of the offerings on the Heiau watching the tourists surf in the fading of the day.

2009_09_28_Hawaii-244-Edit

It was a beautiful morning when we left Lihue to drive to Waimea, but by the time we got to the canyon the morning clouds had settled down into the valley (see Rain over Waimea Canyon)) but we still headed up into the mountains to see what there was to see and when we reached Pu’u o Kila Lookout it was pouring rain. As we sat in the car watching people hurry back from the Kalalau valley trail the rain cleared and the sun came out so we took a short walk along the begining (or end) of the trail until it started to rain again, about 20 minutes later. You can see how the clouds and fog came up from the valley behind us – one moment you could see out over the valley and then 30 seconds later it would be completely covered in clouds. We traded favors of pictures with another family to get this shot of the two of us.
