December 2008

I’m buying a Christmas present for myself, soon, it’s going to be a Canon 5D MarkII  I keep on telling myself I’ll order it when I know it’s in stock, when I know it’s come off of backorder.   I missed my opportunity on the 23 when Adorama had it in stock.   And today should be that day again.  I saw on The -Digital_picture.com that it was in stock, with and without the lens at Adorama, but I got distracted as I was reading down the post I stopped because I came to this:

By the time I stopped giggling to myself and making Mike come over
to watch it (both of us being New Yorkers we could appreciate the truth
in humor of the piece even more) the camera was again out of stock.
Next time, really, I’ll pay more attention to what I’m doing.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday, it’s a belated Happy Hanukkah and a Merry Christmas for everyone!  It’s been a crazy holiday season with heading off to Antigua last week, a very late end of year vacation for us, but I hope everyone has healthy, happy and above all SAFE holiday season and the best of New Years.

At this time of year the phone booth is nearly in the bay.

At this time of year the phone booth is nearly in the bay.

One of my favorite spots off the resort.  We walked by this phone booth every day to go photograph the Royal Terns fighting for a spot on the pilings out in the bay.  The image was taken with around 10AM with my 30D, 24-105L and a cPolarizer.  The only post processing was straightening the horizon line, a small crop and toning down the saturation.  This image would have been best made with a tilt-shift lens to preserve the straight lines in the phone booth and the horizon line.  As it is I had to make a decision  between straight lines on the phone booth or a straight horizon line.  I chose a straight horizon because I thought the image wouldn’t look right with the angle.  After dinner (a yummy lasagne I’ve been working on all day) I’ll work it up with the phone booth straight and see how that looks in comparison.

This is the same image just cropped for the phone booth to be vertical.  So I take back everything I said before about not wanting my horizon line to be off horizontal.  I think it looks better this way.

I did have one good sunrise image, although not of the sun rising over the ocean but of the overflow down from Mud Pond.  This is an HDR of 4 images ranging from -2 to +1EV.  The image at +2EV was just too washed out to be of use.   Surnise, Mud Pond stream

One of my favorite songs is an old Moody blues song called “And the Tide Rushes In”  and the song was playing in my head all yesterday morning.  It was with a smile I read Moose Peterson’s blog post May the Sun Rise to Greet You last night since even without his urging that’s what I did, though I didn’t have nearly the sunrise to photograph as he did.  I got up at 5 to drive to Moonstone Beach for sunrise thinking that it should be a spectacular sunrise since the front blew through overnight and the wind was from the north west so there should be some clouds sprinkling the sky to reflect the sun as it rose.  It certainly seemed that way where I live, about 50 miles north but as I took the southward turn down route 4 I could see a large bank of clouds on the horizon that didn’t disperse as I got closer.  Sunrise itself was a bust but the beach in predawn light was beautiful as the tide was coming in.   I wanted to blur the water a bit but didn’t want to let the exposure be too long so that the rocks that were being covered by the water would show.  I liked this one the best because to me it gives the feeling of the water reaching out to grab the rocks but not quite getting there.

The tide rushes in

The tide rushes in

The only thing was that it didn’t really grab me so I started again and in LR2 converted it to B&W and then worked on it Photoshop (Since for some reason LR2 is so slow I just do everything again in photoshop) and got this:

And the tide rushes in B&W

And the tide rushes in B&W

I’m still not sure which one I like best so comments and criticism is appreciated

My sister has said it all here.  And as much as it’s true for her it’s true for me too, except of course that I’m the middle daughter.  Thank you Lita, for being so perceptive and articulate, as always.
